This bridge is a witness to countless political marches and rallies.
Here are some of the facts about Ayala bridge.
- It was first built of wood in 1872 by Don Jacobo Zobel de Ayala of the Ayala-Roxas Family.
- Construction was completed in 1880.
- The birdge collapsed in 1889, and was replaced with a simple metal saw trussed bridge.
- It was reconstructed in 1908 using steel materials to its present day design.
- It is the first structural steel bridge spanning Pasig River.
- It links San Miguel District to Arroceros District.
- The middle of Ayala Bridge leads to a small islet and an orphanage, the Hospicio de San Jose, founded in 1778.
- It was rumored that Gustave Eiffel, famous for the Eiffel tower in Paris, designed the bridge.
- Its old names were Puente de Convalecencia and Puente de Ayala.
