Science Day at KISP

Yesterday, Science was celebrated at Korean International School with lots of fun-filled activities. Classes from the Elementary Department toured around classrooms that were turned into exhibit areas, food stalls, and team-building activity rooms.

Exhibits included during the Science Day were:
  1. Van de Graaf Generator. It is an electrostatic generator which causes one’s hair to stand on its end. To read how it works, click on the recommended link: http://science.howstuffworks.com/transport/engines-equipment/vdg.htm A Grade 2 student watches her hair rises on its end.
  2. Bernoulli Blower. It uses pressure to levitate a ball in midair.
Grade 1 students line-up to try to send the beach ball in midair.
  3. Bubble Maker. It can create humongous bubbles that are 6 feet in length. There are also bubble makers that can create different shapes of bubbles.
    A Grade 5 student makes a 4-feet long bubble.
Team-building activities enjoyed by the elementary levels were:
  1. Landmine. Class was divided into pairs; each pair with one person blindfolded. The partner guided his/her blindfolded classmate through a landmine of candies and sweets. Partners shared the treats they collected from the landmine.
Grade 5 students make their way through the Landmine while getting as many sweets as they can.
Grade 4 students pose with their Homeroom Adviser as they await their turn in the Landmine.
  2. Tower Building. Class was divided into three groups. Each group was given a set of materials (balloons and sticks for Grades 2 to 3; sticks and straws for Grades 4 to 6) which they built into the tallest and sturdiest tower.
Grade 2 students team-up to build the tallest tower.

Grade 3 students listen to some pointers on how to build a sturdy tower.

Grade 6 students put more tapes on their straw tower.
  3. Castle Building. Class was divided into three groups. Each group was given a set of materials (building blocks of different shapes) which they built into the most beautiful castle.
Grade 1 students make castles of their own using different Geometric shapes.
  4. Snakes & Ladders. This was a race to the last square. Each move was determined by a roll of a die.
A giant Snakes & Ladders board for students of Grades 1 to 3  to enjoy.
Other activities:
  1. Guesstimate. Rubber bands, furry balls, squiggly eyes and cubes were placed separately in jars. Students (and teachers) guessed how many were inside each jar. The correct guess or the closest estimate won a prize.
  2. Photo Booth. An unlimited number of pictures were taken with matching head costumes.
  3. Science Food Stalls. Foods prepared by the Middle School students during their Science classes were served for a very cheap price of Php 15 and below.

It was a delight to see the kids enjoy this year’s Science Day!

A multitude of gratitude goes to the faculty and staff of Korean International School-Philippines for making this event a success. The Science Day for the Elementary Department was headed by Teacher Irene, our E-Science teacher. Thanks to you, Teacher Irene for sharing your Science Day with the E-Math, thus the team-building activities, math games and quiz bees. THANK YOU!
