Ayala Bridge


This picture of Ayala bridge was taken during the Million People March last August 26, 2013.
This bridge is a witness to countless political marches and rallies.

Here are some of the facts about Ayala bridge.

  1. It was first built of wood in 1872 by Don Jacobo Zobel de Ayala of the Ayala-Roxas Family.
  2. Construction was completed in 1880.
  3. The birdge collapsed in 1889, and was replaced with a simple metal saw trussed bridge.
  4. It was reconstructed in 1908 using steel materials to its present day design.
  5. It is the first structural steel bridge spanning Pasig River.
  6. It links San Miguel District to Arroceros District.
  7. The middle of Ayala Bridge leads to a small islet and an orphanage, the Hospicio de San Jose, founded in 1778.
  8. It was rumored that Gustave Eiffel, famous for the Eiffel tower in Paris, designed the bridge.
  9. Its old names were Puente de Convalecencia and Puente de Ayala.
